General Characteristics
1-2 Year Olds
- Fearless (steps off into mid air)
- No partners
- No sense of depth
- Totally charming
- Concentration span 2 minutes
- Play in a parallel style
- Frequent changes of activity – 30 seconds
- May begin to use dominant side
- Loves big bright colourful items
- Colour & shapes can be sorted but without proper names
- Maybe wilful, non-cooperative, will show you if they are bored
- Bumps into others in moving whilst watching others
3 Year Olds
- Loves big muscle activities
- Some will need parents sometimes others will not
- Understanding more about their body
- Loves sense of humour in activities
- Likes freedom to explore and solve problems
- More variety
- Plays in a parallel style
- Concentration span 3-5 minutes for group work (can change every 30 seconds)
4-5 Year Olds
- A lot more social in play enjoys games and rhymes requiring individual involvement
- Cooperative play, starting to work together
- Mastered more skills
- Right / left awareness generally sorted
- Concentration span 7-10 minutes (depending on activity)
- Language and listening mastery
- Can have more basic rules
- Can work in a group
